ASIAN SPECIES

To your left you will find a list of the lesser known Asian species.

Asian tropical forests are known to be richer in commercial species than tropical forests in other regions of the world because of the dominance of the family Dipterocarpaceae. Therefore, logging operations in Asian tropical forests give higher yields than logging in the tropical forests of Africa and America. The dominance of Dipterocarpaceae also implies that the forests are more homogeneous than other tropical forests.

Both in the family of Dipterocarpaceae and in other families there are still a great number of lesser-known species suit-able for commercial end-uses. From the family of Dipterocarpaceae Alan Batu (Shorea albida), Kapur (Dryo-balanops spp.), Keruing (Dipterocarpus spp.) and Mersawa (Anisoptera spp.) are present on this site.

At the end of March 2008 there were a grand total of 1,974,650 hectares of FSC certified forest in Asia issued on 59 certificates.
